<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Veterinary Technicians play a vital role in your pet’s health. Without Veterinary Technicians, veterinary practices would not function as they do today.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Veterinary Technicians and Nurses undergo rigorous training in animal care and handling, laboratory testing, radiography, surgical and anesthetic procedures, nursing care, and many other technical procedures and practices.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #0c343d;"><b>But what exactly does a Veterinary Technician or Nurse do in the practice? </b></span></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #333333;">They perform many of the same tasks that nurses, laboratory technicians, and other specialized technologists provide to people. Check out this list below of just some (<i><b>not all!</b></i>) of a Veterinary Technician's daily duties: </span></span></div>
<ul style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 20px 35px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Often, Veterinary Technicians are the first point of contact with the patient or client, discussing the medical issue that has brought the client to the practice.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">They collect a patient’s medical history by carefully asking all the right questions, obtain vital signs, and collect blood or urine samples for laboratory testing.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Perform laboratory testing on blood, urine, and stool samples.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Prepare the patient and surgical suite for surgery.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Assist in surgical procedures; monitor the patient’s vital signs and watch for any signs of distress in the patient during the surgery.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Ensure the proper sterilization of surgical instruments.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Assist the veterinarian with medical and diagnostic procedures.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Keep the patient calm and comfortable during procedures that may be frightening to a cat or dog.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Provide specialized nursing care after surgery and for critically ill patients.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Change bandages and dressings.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Feed and water the patients and take them out for exercise and “bathroom breaks”.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Educate clients on caring for their animals whether it be proper medication dosing, preventive care, nutrition, or recovery from procedures, surgery, or illness.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Follow-up with clients to check on the progress of the patient once discharged.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In smaller practices, Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Nurses can provide practice management and administrative support.</span></li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Trim nails, express anal glands, clean ears, do sanitary trims, give microchips, take blood pressure readings, position and take x-rays for doctor review, assist with ultrasounds, administer laser therapy, <i><b>and so much more</b></i>. </span></li>
</ul>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Veterinary Technician Week is a week set aside to acknowledge and recognize the role that Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Nurses play in veterinary practices. They are highly skilled and extremely dedicated to the work they do each day. We at <a href="http://www.piperglenanimalhospital.com/" target="_blank">Piper Glen Animal Hospital</a> are so grateful to have the compassionate and capable team that we do. Send a thank you card to the Veterinary Technicians or Veterinary Nurses at your veterinary practice. Better yet, if you happen to be in the practice this week, be sure to thank the Veterinary Technicians in person!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Ensuring your pet maintains a healthy weight is one way to help keep Fido or Kitty in your life for a long time.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This week included the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Many us spend countless hours worrying about the health of our pets, but many of our pets are overweight or obese. “What’s one more treat?” The reality is those extra treats add up and can lead to some serious health issues for your dog or cat. Those extra treats, too much food at mealtimes, and lack of exercise all contribute to obesity.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b><span style="color: #0c343d;">It is so easy to over-feed your pet without even realizing it.</span></b><span style="color: #333333;"> </span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">A decrease in exercise due to poor weather conditions (snow, ice, or persistent rain storms) without a corresponding reduction in the amount of kibble in your dog’s bowl can quickly lead to a gain of a few extra pounds. Even using an inaccurate measuring cup can be a source of overfeeding. Weighing your pet’s food with a kitchen scale, or using a measuring cup specifically designed for your pet’s brand of food are ways to be sure the amount is correct. Ask your veterinarian for help calculating how much food your pet should receive if you are unsure.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. Pets that are overweight or obese can end up with serious health problems and their life expectancy can be reduced. </div>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;"><b>Risks associated with obesity are:</b></span></div>
<ul style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 20px 35px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk during surgery including complications due to decreased lung, kidney, or liver function</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk of diabetes.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk for high blood pressure, which can lead to increased risk of heart disease and kidney disease.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">A decreased immune response leading to difficulties in fighting infections.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Reduced endurance and exercise intolerance, worsening the problem.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk of arthritis, torn knee ligaments, and spinal problems.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Gastrointestinal problems including constipation.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk of cancer.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Increased risk of skin disorders.</li>
</ul>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b><span style="color: #0c343d;">Some steps to take to reduce the bulge with your pet:</span></b></div>
<ul style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0px 0px 20px 35px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Ensure you are feeding the appropriate amount of food. Carefully read the food bag or can to determine the amount your pet needs each day. The instructions on the container are average guidelines; every pet’s requirements will be different. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian for help.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Eliminate treats, at least until your pet’s weight is reduced. Then consider what you are feeding your pet as treats. Is it “junk food” or healthy treats? Many fruits and vegetables are safe for your pets and make great treats – ask your veterinarian what the best treats would be for your pet.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Exercise! Take your dog for an extra walk in the day, or extend your walks by a few minutes. Remember that the pace at which you walk will impact how much exercise your pet is actually getting. A slow meandering stroll around the block will not burn nearly as many calories as a brisk walk or jog of the same distance. Play fetch or chase games with your cat or dog for 15 minutes each day to increase exercise levels.</li>
</ul>
<div style="border: 0px; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 25px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Talk to your veterinarian to determine the best feeding plan for your pet. Different life stages require different feeding regimes. Your veterinarian may recommend a therapeutic diet to help get your pet back on track with his/her weight. We all love our pets, want the best for them, and want to keep them in our lives for as long as possible. </div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="color: #333333;">The most common form of deafness in dogs is age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Most dogs experience some degree of ARHL, beginning sometime during their “third trimester” of life. ARHL begins by impairing perception of middle to high frequency sounds, but encompasses the entire range of sound frequencies as it progresses. </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">It is suspected that most people don’t recognize their dog’s hearing loss until it is almost, if not fully, complete. They may mistakenly interpret their dog’s partial hearing loss as a behavioral issue, sometimes referred to as “selective hearing.” </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">How you can help your dog with hearing loss?</span></strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Observing your beloved dog become less responsive because of hearing loss can evoke a laundry list of emotions such as sadness, frustration, and discouragement. While there may not be a good way to restore your dog’s hearing, here are eight things you can do to make a positive difference for both you and your dog.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;"><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;">1. Check in with your veterinarian</span> </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Verify that the only cause of your dog’s hearing loss is ARHL. Ear canal </span>disease<span style="color: #333333;">, such as a growth, </span>foreign body<span style="color: #333333;">, or </span>infection<span style="color: #333333;">, superimposed on ARHL may transition a dog from partial to complete deafness. Treatment of the ear canal disease may restore an acceptable level of hearing. </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #0c343d;"><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;">2. Train your dog with hand signals</span> </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">When your dog experiences significant hearing loss, your ability to communicate with him via hand signals will create greater safety for your dog and more support for the emotional bond you share. </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Dogs quite naturally communicate via body language, so they tend to quickly learn the meaning of hand gestures. Ideally, training with hand signals in conjunction with verbal cues should begin in puppy kindergarten class. Someday, your youngster will become a senior with hearing loss, and those hand signals that were learned will be super handy (pun intended).</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="color: #333333;">By the way, the popular adage, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” is a bunch of bunk. If your older dog hasn’t been taught to respond to hand signals, begin the training process as soon as possible. Most senior dogs are very capable of learning these new cues.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">3. Use nontraditional signals</span></span><span style="color: #333333;"> </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">In addition to hand signals, find other ways to get your dog’s attention. Examples include actions that create vibrations (clapping hands, stomping on the floor, knocking cans together), use of a flashlight, release of an appealing scent (appealing to the dog, that is), and use of a storm or disaster whistle. Figure out what works best with your dog. Provide a positive reward (favorite snack, belly rub, game of tug of war) when you begin training your best buddy to respond to these new cues.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">4. Avoid startling your dog</span></span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Approach and/or touch your dog when you are within his field of vision. If you need to wake him from sleep, touch him gently in the same place (the shoulder area is ideal). You can also put your hand in front of his nose as your smell may rouse him, particularly if it resembles the odor of a favorite treat. Remind visitors to avoid touching your best buddy when he is sleeping. All of these tactics tend to prevent startle reactions.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">5. Increase your vigilance</span></span><span style="color: #333333;"> </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">This applies to the home front as well as out in the world. A fenced in yard becomes a must. Be sure your dog is on </span>leash<span style="color: #333333;"> or confined when cars pull in and out at your home. Every </span>veterinarian<span style="color: #333333;"> can tell you stories of older, hearing-impaired dogs who were run over in their own driveways.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="color: #333333;">Leashes are mandatory when your dog has exposure to cars, joggers, bikers, skateboarders and other potential hazards. Make sure that every member of your dog’s support team (veterinary staff, pet sitter, groomer, dog walker, doggie day care provider) knows about his hearing loss. Admittedly, even when I know that my patient is deaf, I still tend to talk to him in my usual fashion. Force of habit, I guess. Given our close contact, I like to think that my patient feels more secure sensing vibrations coming from my body.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">6. Enrich your dog’s “smelling life”</span></span><span style="color: #333333;"> </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Dogs rely heavily on their sense of smell. Dog trainer, </span><a href="http://en.turid-rugaas.no/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3888c8; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Turid Rugaas</a><span style="color: #333333;"> explains that, when a dog enters a new situation, the dog’s eyes create the first impression, but it’s the nose that fills in the details. Olfactory stimulation is known to impact canine behavior, as demonstrated by Lynne Graham, Deborah Wells and Peter Hepper </span><a href="http://www.appliedanimalbehaviour.com/article/S0168-1591(04)00197-2/abstract?cc=y=" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3888c8; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">in a study published on Applied Animal Behaviour</a><span style="color: #333333;">. By providing a richer smelling life for your dog, you may help fill in some of his sensory gaps caused by the hearing loss.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">7. Attach an, “I am deaf” tag to your dog’s collar</span></span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">This way, if your dog becomes lost and then found, the good Samaritan involved will understand why your dog is not normally responsive. </span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span class="content-subtitle" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1em;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">8. Give yourself a pep talk</span></span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><span style="color: #333333;">Patience is a virtue when interacting with your aging dog. Yes, it’s easy to feel frustration, sadness and impatience, but keep in mind, your older dog is still capable of picking up on your emotions. Take a few deep breaths and give yourself a pep talk to help restore a sense of patience and compassion.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
There are some silver linings to consider. As your level of care for your hearing-impaired older dog increases, your relationship may become closer than it has ever been. Additionally all of that quaking, quivering, and anxiety caused by loud noises (thunder, gunshot noises, firecrackers) has likely become a thing of the past. Lastly, remind yourself that, with your loving care, your hearing-impaired dog remains very capable of enjoying an excellent quality of life.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box;">If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian -- they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.</em></div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In honor of National Senior Pet Month, <a href="http://www.piperglenanimalhospital.com/" target="_blank"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">P</span>iper Glen Animal Hospital</a> </span><span style="font-size: large;">would like to take a moment to celebrate the </span><span style="font-size: large;">benefits of adopting and owning an older pet.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
While most of us can’t help but dote on a new puppy or kitten, the reality is that caring for a young pet requires a lot of time and energy. Obedience training and curbing behavioral problems is hard work, which is why you might consider adopting a more mature or senior pet.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Unfortunately, senior pets often get overlooked. At shelters and rescues, they are the ones who have the hardest time getting adopted. Many people assume younger is better, and their prejudices (which are often rooted in misinformation) keep stellar seniors from finding their forever homes.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">What Makes a Senior Pet Incredible</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
If you’re considering adopting a pet, seniors make wonderful companions. Especially if you’re looking for a chill couch buddy or a low-maintenance friend who won’t chew on your designer shoes.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Here are some of our favorite reasons senior pets are so amazing:</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-left: 30px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">Cool, calm, and collected</span></span> – In most cases, older pets have a relaxed demeanor, which is appreciated by those living in a small space or those who simply prefer a calmer companion.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-left: 30px;">
<b><span style="color: #0c343d;">A perfect pupil</span></b> – Most older pets already know the basics about how to behave in a home, where to “go potty,” and how to navigate the personalities of other pets. Since seniors are motivated by praise and attention, they make star students when it comes to learning new tricks or any additional behavioral training.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-left: 30px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">No weird surprises</span></span> – With young pets, you never know quite what to expect as they grow into adulthood. With older pets, what you see is what you get. And what you get is a loving, appreciative best friend.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-left: 30px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">Less demanding</span></span> – If you aren’t into strenuous workouts or keep long hours, a senior pet will be perfect. Although all pets need some exercise, older cats and dogs require less than their younger counterparts.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-left: 30px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #0c343d;">Snuggle friends</span></span> – By adopting a senior pet, you will save a life and free up valuable space in shelters and rescues that are already overcrowded. Your new best friend will be grateful, offering loads of love and lasting friendship.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Helping Your Senior Pet Thrive</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
If you already have a senior pet (thank you!), you may be wondering what you can do to help him or her thrive. You may be concerned about arthritis or hearing loss, or perhaps you just need recommendations for the right diet or exercise.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
At Piper Glen Animal Hospital, we provide wellness consultations and exams that are specific to senior pet care. This might include specialty diets, at-home tips, and, of course, recommended senior pet health screenings (for early detection and prevention).</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
To schedule an appointment, please give us a call. Thank you for choosing to adopt a senior pet!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPzHrSI87ned1R_dQCyJMEHZlzOM2gDrqRgZmfQwDDXUzwN4FLHa32-9YS78GQ5x0Q_jLprxt6Wjqd_fxX7yFdL-YbBLiUpq36C4oFU-jZP6FdRdu2MuSQygfD3h_0ZCg_qqXpTi-KJlc/s1600/animal-cactus-cat-699962.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPzHrSI87ned1R_dQCyJMEHZlzOM2gDrqRgZmfQwDDXUzwN4FLHa32-9YS78GQ5x0Q_jLprxt6Wjqd_fxX7yFdL-YbBLiUpq36C4oFU-jZP6FdRdu2MuSQygfD3h_0ZCg_qqXpTi-KJlc/s640/animal-cactus-cat-699962.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We want to explain why we recommend routine annual check-ups </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">for your indoor only cat. </span></div>
<div style="font-size: 18px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 18px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 18px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 18px;">
People who share their homes with cats are definitely a lucky bunch, but not because they have to visit the vet less. Alarmingly, however, the prevailing perception is that indoor cats require less veterinary attention. Sure, certain risk factors associated with outdoor exploration are significantly reduced, but indoor cat care should still include disease prevention on numerous fronts.</div>
</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Reasons Why</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
We know well that cats generally dislike the travel kennel, driving in the car, and leaving their territory. It can be extremely threatening for cats to smell, hear, and see other cats and/or dogs in the waiting room. Now add to this the cost of wellness visits – especially when cats are otherwise healthy – and the draw of the internet to diagnose possible problems.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
What’s the result? Fewer cats receiving the support and care necessary to sustain lifelong health and wellness.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Feline Subtleties</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Cats not only age much faster than their human owners, but they’re also notoriously skilled at hiding symptoms of illness or injury. In fact, subtle shifts in feline behavior or habits commonly escape the notice of even the most involved owner. Many cats end up suffering from a problem long before they’re actually seen by a vet, but we’re determined to stop this trend.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span id="more-195" style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Indoor Cat Care</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Regular wellness care allows for great insight into your cat’s overall health. After discussing the components of lifestyle, we thoroughly examine the following aspects of indoor cat care:</div>
<ul style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Eyes and ears</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Mouth, teeth, and gums</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Muscle tone</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Coat quality, texture, and appearance</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Weight and nutritional needs</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Heart rate</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Breathing quality</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Spine and joint health</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Disease prevention via vaccinations</li>
</ul>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Additionally, indoor cats still deserve protection from parasites. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can come inside your home, exposing an otherwise unprotected animal to various diseases and health conditions.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Preventive medications (and regular de-worming) help indoor cats keep a healthy immune system intact. Heartworm, carried by infected mosquitoes, is especially damaging to cats, and there is no cure.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Do Cats Brush Their Teeth?</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Like the care of all pets, indoor cat care must include regular dental care at home. We also recommend routine cleanings under anesthesia to keep your cat’s dental health in peak condition.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">The Reality</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Regular wellness exams give us the opportunity to establish your cat’s healthy baseline, so we know how to compare results when your cat has a health problem. When we see your cat 1-2 times a year, early detection and treatment of developing diseases yield better results. For instance, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, periodontal disease, cancer, and kidney disease can affect all cats whether they lead strictly indoor lifestyles or not.</div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile-extended; margin: 1em 0px;">
<span style="color: #0c343d;">Big Picture</span></h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: eurostile; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about indoor cat care or would like to discuss solutions for crate training and traveling. Together, we can help your cat live a long, full, and healthy life.</div>

<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">GO TO A PUMPKIN PATCH </span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">It’s decorative gourd season and your dog can help you find the perfect pumpkin to carve. Many pumpkin patches allow dogs — provided they are on <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">leashes</span> and their owners <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">clean up</span> after them. Then remove the costume to make sure he doesn't get overheated and never leave him in costume without your supervision.</span></div>

Many orchards are dog-friendly; check the policies of locations near you. You can share a bite of apple with your dog, just make sure he doesn't eat the seeds, which can be toxic.</span></div>

VISIT A WINERY </span></h5>

<span class="s1" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Want to enjoy a glass of wine with your pup at your side? Some vineyards and wineries are dog-friendly — check out </span><a href="https://www.corkhounds.com/" style="color: #0099be; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Cork Hounds</span></a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> to find one near you. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with the policies of the winery you plan to visit — some dog-friendly wineries still have restrictions regarding where you can have your dog on the property. And of course, plan to keep your dog on a leash while you're there.</span></span></div>
<h5 style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 580px;">

TAKE A HIKE </span></h5>
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">With its crisp weather and colorful leaves, fall is an ideal time of year to enjoy the great outdoors. Take your dog on a <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">hike</span> and enjoy the foliage. Just be sure to consult your veterinarian before starting a new exercise routine and consider your dog’s physical fitness level before choosing a path. When you’re out on the <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">trail</span>, avoid <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">poison ivy</span> and check your dog for ticks when you’re done (and better yet, make sure your dog has tick-preventive on board before you go).<span class="s1" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span></span></div>
<h5 style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 580px;">

GO CAMPING </span></h5>
<div class="caption" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Feel like roughing it? Enjoy a weekend in nature with your best furry friend. Just make sure that in addition to packing the necessities for yourself, your dog is well-equipped as well. That means bringing a leash, dog food, treats, food and water bowls and a bed. And don't forget the first aid kit!</span></div>
<h5 style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 580px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">
PLAY OUTSIDE </span></h5>
<div class="caption" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span class="s1" style="border: 0px currentColor; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">If camping’s not quite your thing, enjoy the outdoors in your backyard or at a local <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">dog park</span>. Cooler weather means you — and your dog — can spend more time playing outside!</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">JUMP IN THE LEAF PILE </span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Who can resist the allure of leaping into a big <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">pile of leaves</span>? We won’t tell if you want to join in the fun. Just make sure there’s nothing in the pile that could hurt your dog, like a sharp branch.</span></div>
<h5 style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 580px;">

EMBRACE FOOTBALL SEASON </span></h5>
<div class="caption" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span class="s1" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Have a favorite team? When you’re watching the game on TV, your dog can help you cheer them on, perhaps with some <span class="s2" style="border: 0px currentColor; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">NFL-themed gear</span>. Or get outside and play some ball with your pup — you never know, he could secretly want to be a wide "<i>retreiver."</i></span></span></div>
<h5 style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 580px;">

CUDDLE</span></h5>
<div style="border: 0px currentColor; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 12px; min-height: 36px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As the days get cooler, what can be more comforting and keep you warmer than snuggling with your furry family member? Grab your pup and some reading material (or turn on the TV) and settle in!</span></div>
